Tributes from Chris Gadd and Chris Parnell were followed by a minute’s silence observed in honour of Jon Read who had been a stalwart member of the club for a great many years, and had recently passed away.
We were able to present most of the trophies but Jane O’Kill and Helen Statham will have to wait a little longer for their presentations.
Chairman, Brian Webb, did the honours (thanks Brian); here are the 2017 competition winners who were able to take their trophies away …
It was sad that Linda confirmed her forthcoming move back to East Sussex but we thanked her with garden tokens for taking on the reigns of Secretary over recent years. A job well done. Thank you Linda and we wish you and Peter all the very best back (at some time) in your former house and garden.
Linda confirmed that April will be her last meeting attendance.
There followed a very special presentation to Liz Morgan, our Competition Secretary, who has been undertaking this role for over 23 years. Wow! Liz was Competition Secretary when I joined the club over 20 years ago and has hardly missed a meeting. Her deep knowledge of plants shames a lot of us but is incredibly useful in the Quiz Team! Liz said she hadn’t realised how long it had been but remembered taking over from Robin Daborn – a long-service award most definitely well deserved. Thanks Liz. She already has ideas on how to use the tokens choosing items to put in the communal garden she manages in Sunninghill. Have fun, Liz.
Our meeting was a small one and there were no volunteers to take on roles (Secretary and Programme Secretary) to keep the club going so it looks likely that this will be our last year. However, we have an excellent programme to work through in 2018 so there is still time for someone to fill the gap but this needs to be done by June when we would start to create the new programme for 2019. The Committee are already starting to plan for closure at year end.
Our meeting finished with the usual refreshments and chat and raffle – Janet had managed to keep the raffle prizes going an extra couple of weeks – well done for nursing them through the snowy period to our new meeting date.
We look forward to a great set of talks for 2018 – next up Claire Brown and Herbs for the Garden, Kitchen and Vase. 5th April, 7.15 pm doors for 7.30 pm – see post below.
