2018 Events
Pics follow of the Xmas lunch at The Berkshire Golf Club where we had a smashing lunch, fun with doling out prizes and some long-needed thank-yous. It was great to have Margaret Latham back with us and our Vice-President, Robin Lack, made a lovely speech recalling some of our past members from a lot of years ago.
Thank you all for making it such a happy event, even though we were saying adieu (not goodbye) … many members want to keep in touch, have monthly lunches, have an outing, and probably another Christmas lunch next year. So WATCH THIS SPACE!
The trophy winners are detailed in summary just below (in the November section) in the 2018-12 Annual Competition final points …
|——————————————————————————————-
Our final month of the annual competition was November and here are the results for 2018:
2018-12 SADGA Competition final points
November competition entries:
Well done, everyone. We had a nice lot of entries for our last meeting. I must say that I do think the Kalanchoe looks intriguing but rather uncolourful. Sorry, Maisie, it just wouldn’t get houseroom from me!!
November Photo Competition:

October competition entries:

September competition entries:
|——————————————————————————————-
Our 2018 Club Challenge produced just 4 entries. The seeds had been miniscule (like dust) but had germinated for some members and not others.
Pat Bond was the worthy winner of the £5 garden token, but would not let me take her photo. So here are the four entries with Pat’s second from the right. Well done Pat.

August competition entries:

July competition entries:

June 28th – Carolann and Alan Young open their garden as a thank-you to the SADGA members. It is immaculate and we could not find a weed! We were treated to a wonderful fruit meringue and very tasty cakes and tea. Thank you both.
|—————————————————————————————
June 24th – visit to Shalford House through the Surrey Horticultural Federation. What a treat this garden was – no fussy statuary just beautiful planting. The Arts & Crafts style house is up for sale (£7.5 million, we understand):
|——————————————————————————————————
June competition entries, plus raffle prizes, and Agnes attacks a heather encouraged by speaker John Hall. We learnt a huge amount about heathers and how brutal you can be to help them bush out. Well done Agnes for volunteering and completing the job to John’s satisfaction!
There were some very fine plants for sale – most of us took advantage and bought several.
|———————————————————————————
May arrangements added to raffle after demonstration by Alison Phillips – she made it look so easy! She wanted to add some yellow daffodils but each time she asked the the audience if they approved, the answer was NO, so they never got added at all.
|——————————————————————
May Competition Entries – not many on show but very interesting:
————————————————————-
May meeting – there were some flowers left over from the arranging demonstration which Helen Statham took home. I asked her to send me a photo of the results and she suggested there should be a “joke” section! Thanks Helen for your efforts – all very colourful.
|————————————————————-
April Annual Competition entries (click on a picture to see as slideshow). I think there was a second entry in Section K which you can see in the picture of Liz judging; Brian has now sent me the photo so the slideshow has been updated:

March meeting – AGM trophy winners from the 2017 annual competition (Jane O’Kill and Helen Statham still to receive theirs):

[Ascot Summer Show photos are down in the July slot]
The photos below are Chris Parnell’s two Autumn Show winners; the third class was ‘Fruits of the Field’ – no winner for Chris in that class! I have to add that I was beaten by my daughter in the ‘Sail Away’ Class (she came 1st) and by my grand-daughter in ‘Fruits of the Field’ where she gained 3rd prize with a close-up of a blackberry. Well done the family (who are about to sail away south for a year leaving end September).
August was a special meeting with Rosy Hardy (from Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants) who gave a most informative talk. With at least 22 Chelsea Gold Medals she knows what she is talking about. Rosy kindly donated a plant to the raffle, too. We all learned a lot and some members went out to visit her nursery and are already rearranging their flower beds! Don’t forget to come to the Plant Sale in September as there may be some bargains to be had as a result.
Club Challenge – Onion ‘Red Baron’
Sadly there were only 3 entries (some people forgot to bring their exhibits!!), but Maisie Mattinson was declared the winner for which she received a £5 garden token from Chairman, Brian Webb. Well done Maisie.
August entries for the annual competition:
SADGA members’ successes at the AHS Summer Show and some pictures to show you what you missed if you didn’t get there:
Sue Potts (Summer Show winners) won prizes for roses and a fuchsia – here are her winners:
Chris Parnell (Summer Show winners) won the photography cup and a couple of other prizes. The summer show always has a section for photos of three related pictures on any subject – these are her winners:
… and if you didn’t get to the show here’s a flavour of what you missed …
July entries for the annual competition (click on a picture to start slideshow):
[The phalaenopsis was given to me by SADGA in 2013 so I am chuffed to bits that it keeps flowering for me – aided by the advice Peter Barnard gave me. Huge thanks to the members, once again. It also won me a first prize at the Ascot Horticultural Society Summer Show at the end of July (see above) – thanks again!]

May entries for the annual competition:
April entries for the annual competition:
March AGM + Member’s Evening
Linda gave the Secretary’s Report, Brian the Chairman’s Report, and Chris the Treasurer’s Report.
Then Brian presented the trophies to the winners.
Special thanks also to Janet, Maisie and Agnes for their work behind the scenes.
March 2017 – entries for Annual Competition:
February 2017 – No competition entries this month (by design, not unwillingness!!)
Feb 2017 – Quiz .v. Ascot Horticultural Society – they beat us by just two points.
Ascot 30 – Sunningdale 28
The audience were also working hard on their own quiz – a few puzzled brows there too. But in the end Ascot were presented with the Alistair Fosdick trophy for another successful win. Well done to Ascot.

Thanks to Chairman, Brian Webb, for presenting the garden token prizes …
Sept 2016 Ascot Horticultural Autumn Show – SADGA successes
Sadly Les Ware was taken ill a few days before the show which meant that he and Joan and their daughter, Sue, were unable to partake. [See below for how well they did in the Summer Show] So I ended up as the only SADGA member entering (2nd and 3rd in photography). I have therefore added a few other pictures so you can see the sorts of exhibits which were on display.

2016 OUTINGS
19th July 2016 – Outing to Alfriston in Sussex:
We had a perfect day to visit Alfriston. Starting with the Old Clergy House we had a guided tour of the garden which contains some wonderful historical characteristics. Inside the Old Clergy House is sparse in places but as the first property taken on by the National Trust there are some interesting features. After lunch we had a short drive to Follers Manor where a treat awaited us. A private house, which opens its garden occasionally to allow visitors, the views over the Cuckmere Valley were stunning. You have to be in the garden to appreciate how special is its design. Here’s a pictorial view of our trip.
15th May visit to RHS Wisley

2015 Outings
A few of us went to Hampton House in August – a visit arranged by Surrey Fed. This gives a flavour of what we saw – a great old house with lovely views to huge ponds linked to the local river. Tea and cake afterwards on a massive grassed area beside the house. Lovely.
2015 May – Allotment judging
The Sunningdale Allotments have a competition each year for the best kept plot. SADGA members have done well – congratulations all round. 2015-05-allotments-william-pack-cup shows you the results.

Trophies were presented at the AGM for the 2014 annual competition. Here are details of the 2014 SADGA Competition Points Total. President, David Kaynes, was unwell so Chairman, Brian Webb, undertook the presentations.
The monthly competition started well for Maisie Mattinson – she is already charging ahead on points with two firsts and a second.

2015 – Quiz with Ascot – 5th February – Ascot 39 points; Sunningdale 38.
2014 Competitions
The first meeting of the year in February produced a handful of entries.
March AGM:
President, Peter Barnard, undertook his last duties before moving to Yorkshire. These were the trophy presentations.
David Kaynes (left) was elected President as his father had been; Brian Webb (right) was elected Chairman. The gavel was ceremoniously passed on.
The March monthly competition was held as usual. See the entries here.
This was Maisie’s winning entry in April. Click here for all April entries and here for May entries,
and June, and July and August.
Click here for September competition entries PLUS the Club Challenge won by Peter O’Kill. His sunflower head measured almost 15 cm, nearly 1 cm larger than his next rival (there were four large seedheads competing) compared to my entry (barely 1 cm!), which I used in Section K (single specimen) as it seemed a shame not to.
Well done Peter and everyone else who kept the slugs at bay to produce some smashing flowers in the 2014 Club Challenge.
Click here for October 2014 entries and the last of the year November entries.
November saw the Photo Competition bring some close won victories. Here are the three winners and the entries.

2013 Annual Quiz, AGM with Trophy Presentations plus March, April and September competitions
We managed to regain the Alistair Fosdick Trophy when we met Ascot Horticultural Society in the Sunningdale Village Hall for the annual Quiz. This brief slideshow shows selected pictures from the evening. They are not the most flattering! The teams were busy identifying plants on a big screen. Sunningdale prevailed in the end beating Ascot by 30 points to 26. While the teams identified live plant material, the audience had a quiz of their own, which was won by Rosemary Goulbourn.
The main events of the March meeting were the AGM and trophy presentations which can be seen in this slideshow. President, Peter Barnard, presented the prizes except for his own for which Brian Webb (deputy Chairman) did the honours. Here is a list of winners. The evening ended with a buffet supper, enjoyed by everyone.
Finally, take a look at the slideshows which show some of the winners from the monthly competitions in March, April and September.
Here are the three classes for the November 2013 Photo Competition: Spring, Winter, and Exhibitor’s Choice.

Annual Sunningdale vs. Ascot Horticultural Society Quiz held on 8th February 2012
Well, we lost the Alistair Fosdick Trophy on 8th February when we met Ascot Horticultural Society in North Ascot for the annual Quiz. They thrashed us 47 points to 33½. Congratulations to them.
Chris Parnell captained the team of Peggy Dann, Brian Webb and Liz Morgan. The rounds covered subjects like identification of seeds, detailing common names and specifying type of plant (e.g. annual/perennial), propagation techniques for stated plants, guessing the weight of specified fruit and veg (according to the Guinness Book of Records – can you believe an 8-lb 14-oz strawberry, 1983 in Kent?), and a round each on fruit and vegetables identifying them from their variety names. It was quite tough and our best round was with the common names and type of plant.
It was a chilly evening – Ascot laid on a great buffet for us and hot tea. We were very grateful to have supporters in the audience. You can see what classes earned trophies in the Competition Rules.

Annual Sunningdale vs. Ascot HS Quiz held on Thursday 3rd February 2011
Sunningdale managed to win back the Alistair Fosdick trophy from Ascot Horticultural Society on Thursday 3rd Feb 2011, when they met at the Village Hall for the first meeting of Sunningdale’s programme.
There were six rounds of questions – most of them with horticultural connections, but including natural history. As usual the final scores were incredibly close; just 38 points to 36½. Brian Webb, deputy Chairman, presented the trophy to Sunningdale’s Captain, Doug Smith.
The evening rounded off with a delicious buffet supper and the expectation of another fun evening in a year’s time.
